I wasn’t invited here, so I came to see why I wasn’t invited. —Richard Prince
It’s a tough thing to make something intended for response, or vice versa. Depending on the circumstances it can be a chicken-egg query or a laid-an-egg vibe. I think this will be more of an interesting inquiry than a dud.
I blogged about this venture last year, and with the line-up of writers and visual artists for this year, I predict interesting things again! Trevor Young, Lisa Marie Thalhammer, Mia Feuer and more give us the hard art, while Reb Livingston, Amber Sparks and more give us the words.
Call and Response opens tonight, Saturday, June 2nd with a reception from 7-9pm at Hamiltonian Gallery, 1353 U St., NW.
Fridays: Jazz in the Garden All Summer Long -
The absence of Doug Aitken’s Song 1 is creating a hole in my heart. Live jazz in the NGA Sculpture Garden won’t fill it, but at least it’s bringing together art and music in a way that we don’t get enough here.
Jazz in the Garden is every Friday from 5:00 to 8:30pm at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden, now through Labor Day weekend.

Iona Rozeal Brown & Asia After Dark This Saturday! -
The Freer Sackler’s Asia Society hosts these gatherings periodically and this one sounds especially good:
“The evening features a mash-up performance of Japanese vogue dance, theater, storytelling, and hip-hop music choreographed by visual artist iona rozeal brown and performed by soloist dancer Monstah Black. Guests can create an expressive mask using Asian botanical symbols and Ashanti adinkra symbols from West Africa, make fun photo booth memories, and enjoy delicious Japanese fusion bites, specialty cocktails, dancing, and more.”
What’s better than hip-hop, creating and wearing masks, dancing and gettin’ tipsy in a museum on a Saturday night?
