Tonight opens the 11th annual invitational survey of outstanding work by MFA/BFA students in the Washington and Baltimore area by Conner Contemporary. 19 artists from 5 representing institutions have been chosen by exhibition founder and curator, Jamie Smith, Ph.D.
Prior to the opening reception for Academy 2011 (which starts at 6pm) there is also a panel on Collecting and Emerging Art at 5pm. Panelists include Robert Shapiro (collector), Henry Thaggert (collector), Melissa Ichiuji (artist), Alberto Gaitan (artist), and Victoria Reis (Director, Transformer Gallery). Helen Allen, co-director of the (e)merge art fair, will moderate.
There will also be various other tie-ins related to DC’s (e)merge Art Fair, PULSE Miami and Industry Gallery. A concentrated amount of happenings at this opening, but it remains to be seen whether they will collectively overwhelm or underwhelm.
Exhibit runs from July 9 - August 22, 2011. Conner Contemporary Art is located at 1358 Florida Avenue, NE, Washington, D.C. Gallery hours are Tuesday - Saturday 10-5pm.
